Learning is personal - why personalized learning pathways make good learning outcomes.

Imagine walking into a training program that seems to be tailor-made for you.  Or perhaps you are on a learning path that hits on all the right aspects of your job, and exactly on the skillsets where you and your manager agree there are opportunities for improvement.  Sound like a dream?  Well, hopefully, I can help you and your team make that dream become a reality!

When an employee comes to a training program, they bring with them diverse backgrounds, skills, and learning preferences. Tailoring learning experiences to accommodate these differences can be done by offering personalized learning paths. This can involve pre-assessment quizzes, and/or conversations with the management team, to identify individual knowledge gaps, allowing employees to focus on areas where they need improvement.

Self-directed learning, within a framework, is a valuable concept for those in small businesses.  Providing a menu of options for employees to choose from based on their specific needs, career growth plans and general learning preferences also creates a personalized learning path.

With AI tools coming available for L & D experiences, the option for customized and personalized learning paths could be a real offering in the near future (if it isn’t here already).  Personalization fosters a sense of ownership over the learning process, increasing motivation and engagement. By catering to individual needs, organizations can ensure that training is not a one-size-fits-all approach but a customized journey for each participant.

We all want an experience that meets our needs, wants, and unique background.  For small businesses, capturing the data needed to create personalized learning paths is a little more difficult, but not impossible.  For mid-size/larger businesses, having the resources to create the customized pathways can be more of an issue, but again not impossible.

The impact of personalized learning pathways on the employee can be measured in factors such as increased employee engagement, faster skill acquisition, and overall satisfaction in the workplace.  For businesses, these impacts can lead to reduced attrition, and higher profitability, which are both very desirable for any business leader.
